Desi Quilters October Challenge

This simple strip cushion cover I made for Desi Quilters October Challenge. The rule is to make STRIP quilted items of any size. So, I decided to make this cushion cover:

I used my emboss batik fabric which I brought from Indonesia on my last visit last July. I love the vibrant colors of this batik.

I did FMQ too!!! This my second serious try. I just moved the fabric without following any design and realized I should PRACTICE more. I really want to do in a bigger quilt.

Black n White Pinwheel Quilt

I've done my second custom order of big summer quilt. This one is 84" x 102". She asked for a black n white quilt for her son. So, since I love Pinwheel, I made this one for him.

Done and delivered:

They were very happy with this one and the Pink and Lavender one. In the end, a happy customer is the biggest reward. They really made my day.

More photos available in my Google + Album.

Thanks for stopping by...until then..

Pink and Lavender Quilt

Finally I did it!!. I'm so excited cos this is my biggest quilt so far. It measured 84" x 94". It takes rather long to finish cos I was not sure I can quilt such a big quilt in my home sewing machine =,=.

So, here it is, my first custom order quilt:

She wanted in Pink and Lavender. I  got the idea from one quilting magazine. It's basically a half log cabin block, I simply changed the arrangement of the blocks.
Luckily, I got a matching lavender paisley fabric. It's lightweight cotton which become soft after washing.

This time I learned that taping your fabric nicely really helps in making the quilting sandwich. It makes the pinning process easier.

Since the quilt is quite big, I used a faux binding ^_^...yep, I bound the quilt from the excess of the backing fabric. It's quite tricky but I managed. I guess this is the best binding option if you're making a big quilt. Get a matching or contrast fabric and voila you'll get an interesting binding ^_*.

There are few tutorials on the web, but mainly you only have to cut off the batting and trim the backing to  approx. 1"-1.5", folded twice  and bind your quilt. You can check THIS TUTORIAL by Rae

That's all for now. Gotta go and do my long list of WIPs now..^^

36 Patch Fruity Orange Quilt

Yes, that's what I call this one. Its been a UFO for a year. I was hooked on Amanda Jean's blog with her easy to follow  QALs n then out of nowhere I decided to try this 36 patch QAL  . There was supposed to be a yellow blocks  too but I ran out of fabric so I just used these 2 colors.

It was fun to make...and to see I actually have the guts to piece all those blocks is still shock me even now...LOL. this is one of my first attemp on serious quilting. And the biggest so far. Do I sound proud?? Well..I do LOL..

So here are few pics of my Fruity Orange

Now, it's sitting pretty is my room waiting for the weather to get colder then I can snuggle up under this one ^^

oh and if you want to see how others are doing you can visit Crazy Mom's Quilt Flickr Page. It's just so inspiring to see what others are doing in Flickr ^^.

Until then...Happy Quilting

Cathedaral Windows continues QAL # 3

This is the last one of Cathedral Windows QAL series at Desi Quilters. It's using traditional method which is my favorite because it really has a different charm when finished. Though the ironing part is a bit tidious (at least for me..LOL)..but I love the end result of this method. If you like to make one, hop over to Chumkie's blog to see the detail instruction.

and to assemble the cushion cover I use tutorial from  WARMTH IN THE NORTH which give a perfect finish for my cushion. Now, I'm thinking of making a big one with this and I can use up all my scrap for that...hmm....

and this the 2 CW Cushion made using different method

Celebrating Independence Day

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.
Franklin D. Roosevelt

This is the way quilters celebrating Independence Day. And in my case, I have 2 Independence Day to celebrate, India and Indonesia.

We at Desi Quilters are having August Challenge with the rules: (1)  Make a mini not bigger than 12"x12", using pieces not bigger than 1.5" finished (2) Colours to be used - saffron, white and green ONLY..Yes, the Indian Flag colours.

I was in the middle of busy Ramadan, but I just can't stay away from my sewing machine especially when I have this lovely block to try which I think will be perfect for the challenge. Yes, it's Great Granny from Bee in My Bonnet

So here's my entry for the August Challenge:

6.5" squares Coaster

and the second one, today 17th August  is Indonesia's Independence Day. To celebrate it, today I first attempted making this coaster using foundation piecing. Which is TOUGH!! But I made it, though it's not as neat as I'd like it to be. The finish size is 4.5" squares. I should have tried something bigger than that -,-.

So, here's the Red and White (Indonesian Flag colors) coaster:

Until then...Happy Quilting ^_^

DQ June 2012 Challenge: All Squares

"....regrets I have a few, but then again too few to mention.." My Way - Frank Sinatra

This Cushion Covers started as a mistake. One lady wants me to make quilt for her daughter something in girly colors. So, I thought of doing 16 patch blocks like the one I saw on the web

So I cut few jelly rolls and it turned out the block is just too small for the big quilt that I plan. Luckily I only cut few pieces  as trial.

Now, what do I do with this cute tow 16 patch blocks? and then I remember the June challenge at Desi Quilters, a FB group where I belong. The RULE was make any quilt with only SQUARES.So why not use this one as a Cushion Covers..and I found a scrap green matching fabric too..so here it is..my entry for the June Challenge:

So, here's my monsoon cushion covers, just like one of my fellow DQ said:).

Until then...Happy Quilting

Trial and Error

Admitting Error clears the Score, And proves you Wiser than before.

A friend wants me to make a black and white quilt for her son. So I have this simple 9 patch black and white block with a dash of colors. I was thinking it would be brighter and since she doesn't want any red on it so I go ahead on cutting and sewing frenzy

and another phone call came and said it should be just black n white and grey. So I had to abandon the 9 patch block and changed it to pinwheel (yes, my favorite). And since I cut black and white fabric into 5" squares I just don't have the heart to cast them away. So I used the same 5" and sewing away.

After 20 blocks I realized that this will be too tiny for a big quilt. Too much of work. I will need like 80 blocks (Dear God)..but it's so CUTE! I love working with HST but 80 blocks is almost overwhelming for me as a daring beginner quilter :D
And after lots of thinking, I decided to make the same pinwheel pattern but with a bigger square pieces. So I started cutting 10" squares and sewing away. There you are..I need few more blocks to make a complete big quilt :)

and what about the small ones?? I made cushion covers with them. Out of 20 blocks I made 5 cushion covers which looks so cute :)

If you like the cushion covers, it's up for sale on my ETSY shop.

Well, sometimes you have to learn it the hard way...but then again, sometimes mistake is creativity in disguise :)
Until then...happy quilting

Black and White Pinwheel Lap Quilt

Remember this ONE? Finally I have done it. It takes rather long :)  As usual I'm using flannel  batting since I don't get a proper batting as yet in this corner of the world. Well, I believe in using what ever available at hands now. And to be frank, flannel batting is not bad at all, though it's a bit expensive -_-

Here it is sitting prettily on my swing :)

Black, white and red

It has scrappy backing and scrappy binding too. I thought of doing free motion quilting but I'm not confident enough to do it in a bigger quilt :D.

scrappy backing

More photos you can see them in my FLICKR.

Until then...Happy Quilting ^_^

Collaboration Quilt

This quilt is made for our friend, wulan's daughter, Anisha. She's the most adorable miscivious 2 years old with her big brown eyes and her super cute pout:D

Agnes from Smurfing Time was doing all the applique. The idea was taken from Indonesian book. Unfortunately the book doesn't have actual size pattern, hence Agnes drew everything herself and then doing the appliques by hand. She used button hole stitches all over.

There you are the details, aren't they cute? I especially love the bees and the mushroom

I did the patchwork and quilting. I used flannel as a batting and did simple and straight hand quilting.
Btw, she didn't know she's going to receive this..it's kind of secret :D. I hope she will like it ^__^

A bit busy

A charming woman is a busy woman.
Loretta Young

March had been a busy months. I was busy with few custom orders, try to get my shop back to track again, preparing for my April's exhibition with a friend, the kids are having final exam, etsc, hence not much time to update the blog. However, all my sewing activities are (almost) regularly in my Facebook Page.

Here are few things I've completed last month

This patchwork coaster is my entry for IMQG March Challenge. The rule was to use 2 FQ with one solid and one printed. 2 FQ will make 4 coaster (4"x 4"). and I WON the challenge...yay!!...

I made 2 of these table top. One I sent as a gift to my DH cousin.

This drawstring bag I made based on tutorial my Ayumi of Pink Penguin. I made this as a gift for my son's teacher.

This one also I made this table runner as a gift for my younger son's teacher. I used a matte golden fabric as border and love how it lit up the whole thing.

There are few more things I've made during the month of March but I don't want to bore you with long post, instead please go and take a look at my Google + Album .

Thank you for dropping by
Happy Crafting
