Last month, I finally completed my first scrappy quilt, which I had wanted to make for a long time. During the pandemic, I had a lot of odd off-cut fabrics from making facemasks, so I cut some of them into 5" squares and some into smaller squares.
I had a box full of 5" pieces and a few weeks ago, while rearranging my sewing room, I decided to take the box out and started piecing 9 patch block.
My plan was to sew a few blocks in a week. I figured I needed 35 blocks to make the quilt size that would fit our rather large single bed. Making smaller blocks is less overwhelming than making one long single row at a time. Since it's meant to be scrappy, so I don't think about color coordination. It will work out in the end :)
It took me a few weeks to make the top and then I found this VIDEO about basting quilt on a small table. Frankly basting a big quilt is a bit daunting for me! Now with this method, I can easily baste my quilt without breaking my back!I fact I could baste the quilt pretty quickly.
Next to cleared my sewing space and started quilting it on my Jack sewing machine. I have not quilted a big quilt in a while so I was a bit nervous. I decided to quilt it 1/4" from each side of the square, vertically and horizontally. I wanted a slightly fluffy quilt this time. I used 150 gsm cotton batting.
For the backing, I opt for this cheerful yellow print from HERE . There is a similar one in Orange . I used the floral one for the middle part and the chevron print for the sides. The fabric is soft and it's great for quilt backing!
Now I can't wait to make another one, maybe with bigger squares. I still have quite a lot of 5" squares and also 10" squares. If you'd like to see the process, I have made a video and put it up on my YouTube channel a few weeks ago.
How's everyone doing? I hope you enjoy your summer this year even though you maybe just stay at home like me :D. The good thing is this year finally we put an AC in the living room which opens up to my drawing sewing room. So, I can do my work pretty comfortably during the summer, which can be very humid.
Another good thing is I have time to update my shops in Etsy as well as my Website with a few face masks and fabrics. When you're a solopreuner, running your small business from the drawing-room, it can be quite overwhelming sometimes, especially now with everyone is doing work/class from home. I will add more fabric bundles in the next few weeks, maybe a few bundles at a time. Creating a fabric bundle is fun because I just love Indian prints and colors. A few days ago, someone asked for black and white fabric which I posted on Instagram Reel and asking if I have another black and white. While pulling out fabrics, I realize that even in white there are so many shades :D
Sometimes, I get inspired and started making stuff, like these few 3D face masks using my own pattern. I use a couple of them and I must say it's the most comfortable masks! So lightweight and breathable. I either use cambric or poplin cotton for the lining because they are more tightly woven which is good for filtering. Even the triple-layer mask is still very comfortable.
In between, I managed to sew a couple of scrappy blocks from my 2.5" box. I haven't got time to continue my granny square quilt yet, but here I am started another scrappy project. This one doesn't need so much planning though. After looking at #scrappysquaresewalong on Instagram, I am so inspired to start one. Well, I'm not good at following a challenge or a quilt along. So, I'll do it at my own pace and will not stress over the deadline. It's supposed to be fun activities for me.
The block is scrappy 36 patch blocks (I love the first one I made) and I finished around 8 blocks now. I make 4 mini 9 patch blocks and then put them together. Sometimes I only able to do 1 mini blocks and sometimes I can finish 3 or 4 mini blocks.
I'm getting more addicted to making scrappy patchwork. For now, 2.5" squares is my fave cut. I don't cut them all at once, but I try to cut more frequently and I am so happy now I have more varieties from the remnants of the mask :D
If you'd like to see the fun scrappy bundle, check out my Etsy Shop or on my WEBSITE. I ship internationally from website too via DHL or sometimes FedEx if the customer prefers it. I'm so glad I got the DHL account done and I've been shipping out regularly now. I'll talk about my experience in my next post!
Thank you for stopping by today, stay creative & stay safe!
I mentioned in my previous post about the #100dayproject that is going on in Instagram. I decided to play along and sewing up my scraps, UFOs, and PHDs.
It feels so rewarding when I able to complete something that has been in my UFOs box. Like these Pillows I made last week.
I have a small jar of 2" squares which I collected for quite sometimes. I made a couple of 9 patch blocks from them. Some of them, I turned it into mug rugs for a swap. And a few coasters which I gave them away.
So last week, I decided to make a dent to my 2" jar and started piecing them into 9 patches, while watching my kdramas. Luckily there are so many good korean dramas to keep me company.
Work in Progress
This patchwork top is totally made of scraps, right down to the black and white stripe borders, which came from my wallet binding scraps. I add sashing to the 9 patched and added long border. I really love this black and white stripe. I will need to get a few yards next time when I go to Indonesia. I used it alot for wallet. When nothing else work, black and white stripe always the solution!
I am using fleece batting for this pillow which I got from Tina of the Square Inch. Quilting it using straight line quilting on my jack sewing machine while watching Love in the Moonlight drama. I know, it's an old one (2016 drama) and I don't usually enjoy period drama, but Park Bo-Gum and Kim Yoo-jung are just too cute together.
The back of the cushion cover is a colorful floral cotton fabric. I'm glad I saved up the last piece of this fabric, it matched perfectly.
Envelope Closure
This pillow will make a cute decorative pillow in the living room or a baby room. I added this cushion in my Etsy Shop and also in my Indian WebShop. There are still many scraps I need to sew and I am so excited to sew smaller projects like this.
Meanwhile, I made a small progress with the scrappy log cabin. I finished 3 color blocks so far. I hope I will be able to add one or two color blocks this weekends.
